It is becoming increasingly obvious Xiaomi have a best selling phone in the Mi5. The phone was launched at the just concluded Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, to a lot of fanfare. You’d expect that after all the rumors since last year. The price was mostly the selling point. In the final analysis, the specs were so good the Mi5 is comfortably mentioned in the same sentence with other flagships like Samsung Galaxy S7 and the LG G5.

So how is the phone doing in the market after it was opened for registration for users in China and the flash sale that occurred three days ago?

Let’s start with the registration, according to numerous reports, it seemed people were so anxious to get the Mi5. You can’t blame them though. They waited over 18 months for Xiaomi’s latest flagship after the Mi4 was launched. And for the people of China, Xiaomi is one of the best phones to own at the price it is being sold. A whooping 17 million registrations were recorded ahead of the flash sale of the phone. The amazing thing is that figure was achieved just five days after the Xiaomi opened up the registration portal to the public. That is just how anxious the people of China were.

As for the flash sale three days ago, Xiaomi was also overwhelmed by the number of people who actually bought the phone. Figures show (mydrivers.com reported this news in Chinese. You’d need an online translation service for it) that 4 million units of the Mi5 were sold on that say. This is really something. This one day sale figure was achieved in only China. For Xiaomi, the demand outstripped want they were able to push to the market. They have now asked Foxconn, an independent smartphone maker, to produce more units of the smartphone to meet the expected demand in the next open sale.

Unlike other smartphone makers, Xiaomi tend to launch their devices only in core markets like China, Brazil and other Asian countries. If this momentum is sustained, Mi5 may become one of the best selling smartphones of the year when it is launched worldwide. And I won’t be surprised if it actually ends the year as the best selling smartphone. Watch this space.

The success of the Mi5 should not be surprising though. This is a phone powered by Qualcomm’s latest chipset, the Snapdragon 820, Adreno 530 GPU and a RAM of 4GB and 3GB. Other powerful features of the Android 6,Marshmallow, smartphone, include a 16MP rear camera, a 4MP ultrapixel front camera and a 3000 mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0. What is there not to like about this 5.1″ 1080p display phone at the price it is being offered. For the flash sale only the 3GB RAM models were offered to the public.

There are two variants of this model: a 3GB RAM model with a storage of 32GB to be sold at about $302. The other variant is the 3GB RAM and internal storage of 64GB to be sold at about $352. The ceramic-bodied premium version(4GB RAM, 128 GB internal storage), would be made available at a later date to the public. This would cost just about $413.
