xiaomi mi5

I just love everything about life. I am one of the admins of this innovation tech blog for all Africa

Is the Xiaomi Mi5 the best alternative to the OnePlus Two? That is a question best answered by  looking at the specs. But looking at specs alone might be inadequate. The best indices, as far as I am concerned, is to look at the specs/price ratio. The OnePlus Two is at the top end of the specs chain. It competes with the best in the market at a far lower price. Add that to the exclusivity given the phone by OnePlus’ unusual but clever sales strategy, you end up with a gadget everybody wants to have, but can’t have. You have to wait in a line that is longer and more exclusive than an iPhone’s lineup.

Buying a smartphone as good as the OnePlus Two, like the Xiaomi Mi5, means you get to own a top end smartphone immediately without having to get on a waiting list. But is the Xiaomi Mi5 also top notch? Remember, we are talking about specs to rival or even better the specs of Samsung’s and iPhone’s flagship devices.

So far what we know about the Xiaomi mi5 are mostly news about the specs, launch date, release date and prices. If Xiaomi is sticking to the trend of its previous smartphones like the Mi4, the leaked stories about the Xiaomi Mi5 should be on the mark, give or take a few errors. But it is normal for OEMs to pre-announce a new phone through leaks in sometimes very obscure sources. When the product finally emerges, the leaked reports tend to be fairly accurate most of the time.

So here is what we know about the Xiaomi Mi5 for now. See below for a full summary of the specs

Display
The Xiaomi Mi5 is reportedly going to be a 5.3 inch, IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen display with a resolution of 1440 X 2560 pixels. I have seen reports of a larger display, but I don’t think it is going to be Xiaomi Mi5more than 5.5 inch. All the other specs about the display are consistent, down to the 16M colors.

OS, CPU and Chipset
In this day and age, the least Android OS to have on a new smartphone is the Android 5.0, aka lollipop. The Xiaomi Mi5 does not miss a trick there and the phone can be a upgraded to Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

The chipset is the top notch Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, ably supporting a quad-core 2.2 GHz central processing unit and an Adreno 530 GPU.

Memory and Storage
Sadly there is no slot for a microSD card to expand the storage. This is like a trend now among OEMs. The trade off is a large internal storage capacity. With a storage of either 16 GB or 32 GB, you have enough space there to store you large files. All this driven by a 4 GB RAM. With that kind of memory, the possibilities are immense for this smartphone.

Battery
This is the age of big batteries and fast charging technology. With the Xiaomi Mi5, you get both. The battery is an immense 3030 mAh which can last a whole day on heavy usage without a need for a recharge. The fast charging feature in the phone can get a flat battery up to 60% in 30 minutes. If that is true, then Xiaomi have really made a winning feature there. 60% in 30 minutes in an over 3000 mAh battery is the fastest I have come across so far.

And of course, the battery is non-removeable.

Verdict: I started out putting up the Xiaomi Mi5 against the OnePlus two, but ended up doing a mini review of only the Mi5. I wanted to present to you only the specs of the Mi5 to avoid any distractions. This is to allow you to make up your mind on how the two phones compare. A review of the OnePlus two was adequately covered here. Do have a quick look and do a comparison between the two

Finally, at a price of just $400 (or $399  if we need to split hairs) I belief you don’t need to wait for an invite from OnePlus to buy a moderately priced high specs phone, just start saving; come November, the phone will be released and you can get yourself a high end smartphone at a decent prize.
