Snapchat, an image messaging and multimedia mobile application appears to be gearing up for a move from software into augmented relaity hardware, as it has joined the group that runs the Bluetooth wireless standard.

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group gained a new member, according to the Financial Times, as membership is a prerequisite for the release of any Bluetooth-operated devices.Speculation has been rife that Snapchat are to release a pair of augmented reality goggles as a supplement to its popular app.

Just like Snapchat evolved into a mix of private messaging and public content, including brand networks, publications, and live events such as sports and music, I think they are also ready to move from just software to Augmented Reality Hardware.

WHY DO WE THINK SO? LET’S TAKE A LOOK AT THE BLUETOOTH SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP..

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG)is the body that oversees the development ofBluetoothstandardsand the licensing of the Bluetooth technologies andtrademarksto manufacturers. The SIG is a not-for-profit, non-stock corporation founded in September 1998. The SIG is headquartered inKirkland,Washington. The SIG has local offices in Beijing, Seoul, Tokyo, and Malmö.

The SIG owns theBluetoothword mark, figure mark and combination mark. These trademarks are licensed out for use to companies that are incorporating Bluetooth wireless technology into their products. To become a licensee, a company must become a member of the Bluetooth SIG.

Previous reports also claimed that Snapchat had hired a slew of professionals with experience in AR and wearables, including former staff from Microsoft’s HoloLens project and Qualcomm Vuforia.

Would the Snapchat smart glasses be a part of the Snapchat Lab the startup launched in February 2015? It’s interesting to note that one of the team’s last job posting concerns a “3D Computer Vision Engineer” that will have to Prototype groundbreaking new user experiences involving 3D graphics, including experiences that require visual understanding of the scene.Interesting right?

For now, all we can say is that we can’t wait to see what Snapchat is working on!

So.. Can you see why we think so? Let us also know what you think about a device made by Snapchat.
