The rumors are now over. The Vivo Xplay 5 was launched yesterday as promised by Vivo. Yes, Vivo Xplay 5 has being one of the most eagerly awaited phone of the year. And why would a relatively unknown brand from China be eagerly awaited? The tag, ‘the world’ s first 6 GB RAM smartphone’ should fuel the anticipation if nothing else does. Yeah, get used to it. This smartphone has more memory than most laptops. So it is not a spec to take lightly even if it is not coming from Samsung’s latest flagship.

The question now is, what else has the Vivo Xplay 5 got to offer apart from the huge memory. At the China event yesterday, Vivo actually presented two variants of the phone: the standard Xplay 5 with 4GB of RAM powered by the snapdragon 652 and the Xplay 5 Elite with a snapdragon 820 chipset and 6GB RAM. These are the only differences between the two models. In the tech world, these differences are enough to cause a huge disparity in price.

You would expect a phone with that kind of RAM to also pack other impressive specs. Vivo did not miss a trick. Starting with the thickness (or lack of thickness), the phone is just 7.6 mm thick. Making you wonder how they can fit in an adequate battery. But Vivo Xplay 5 did manage to pack an impressive 3,600 mAh battery with fast charging feature.

As for the body, the Xplay 5 is a unibody smartphone made entirely of aluminum metal and using Corning Gorilla Class 4 to protect the display. Talking about the display, it is a 5.4” Super Amoled Quad HD screen with a resolution of 1440 X 2560 pixels, curved to both sides like the Galaxy s7 edge. But unlike the Galaxy s7 edge, the curved edge of the display have no shortcut icons.

Like all the best smartphones, the Vivo Xplay comes with the latest Android 6.0 Marshmallow. The in-built non-expandable storage is so huge at 128 GB. Anyhow you look at the inboard storage, it is enough to fit in your files, videos and photos.

Which leads us to the camera specs. On the back is Sony’s latest and best, the IMX298 rated at 16MP with a dual-tone LED flash, electronic image stabilization feature and phase detection auto focus. The secondary camera is an 8MP affair. Selfie lovers would have a terrific time with this.

Other features include a fingerprint scanner at the back, Hi-fi 3.0 dual stereo speakers, USB Type-C and custom liquid cooling system to keep the chipset’s temperate down which ensures long battery life and optimal performance at all times.

The phone goes on sale on the 8th of March. The standard Vivo Xplay 5 would set Chinese buyers back $565 while the Elite edition would cost $655. A rather modest price for a phone with such specifications I must admit.
