If you told me a phone was named Vaio Phone Biz, the first thought in my mind would be, whoever named that phone had no inkling about the connection between a product’s name and its marketability. Vaio didn’t put much thought into coming up with a good name for their Windows 10 smartphone. Maybe they figured the brand ‘VAIO’, well known in the PC business, would do the trick for them. It doesn’t I’m afraid. The name is so weird to put it mildly.

Back in October, it was announced that Vaio was one of six companies that was going to produce a Windows 10 phone to complement the Windows 10 ecosystem. For Vaio, this is their second smartphone after the gorgeous and more aptly named Vaio Phone

The Vaio Phone Biz shows that the engineers at Vaio have the ability to transfer their high-end standards in laptop designs to the smaller smartphone. The indistinct curves, blending subtly with the rough lines, encased in a no nonsense aluminum body brings to mind the good old days of the Nokia phones.

Is Vaio hoping that the nostalgia from Nokia fans would see them trooping to the market to get this phone? Maybe so. Windows phone would do with a bit of good news in the market place. After sales of Windows phones declined by a massive 49%, a good showing by the Vaio Phone Biz would also reflect well on Windows 10 mobile. But, to be frank, Vaio is taking a shot at the unknown. There must be a good reason the market refused to be enamored by Windows phones.

Let’s take a brief look at some of the specs of Vaio Phone Biz

Display And Resolution
The Vaio Phone Biz has a full HD display size of 5.5 inch with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. Coupled with Qualcomm’s Adreno 405 GPU, one gets good, sharp pictures and graphics. Even though the brightness might be a little tainted at sharp angles, it would work well if the display is projected to a larger screen. Remember, Windows 10 is all about Continuum integration for all Windows 10 gadgets.

Chipset, Memory and Storage
The smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 617 chipset clocked at 1.5 GHz supported by an impressive RAM of 3GB.

On the storage front, it comes with a decent 16 GB of internal storage which can be expanded up to 128GB with the provision of a microSD slot.

Camera and Battery
The Vaio Phone Biz doesn’t do too badly here. Considering it is primarily a business phone, a 13MP back camera and a front camera of 5MP might be seen as too excessive for business people who are too busy to use their phone cameras. Perhaps Vaio is looking at the not too distant future when it would have to re-brand the phone to target a wider market.

The battery though is a disappointment at 2800mAh.

For now, the phone, marked for release and sale at around $430 in April, is to be sold only in Japan. Hopefully, that might change in the future with a world wide release in selected markets.
