A few days ago while shopping for a new mobile device for a friend who got bored of using his present smart phone running the android 4.4.2 OS, i got reminded of a stack reality that at first may seem trivial but actually is a subject of great concern. A co-shopper kept arguing what the specifications on the pack of an infinix phone really meant. The 1.3GHz quad-core processor specs had generated a hot debate, unfortunately neither the sales attendant nor the shopper had the slightest of clues what the capability of 1.3GHz processor were. Without much frenzy i stepped in, feeling like Einstein, oh well more like Steve Jobs i gradually explained the processor power terms to both parties, i discovered i had just done the job of the sales attendant, only that i won’t be getting any stipends or tips of any kind, at least not anytime soon. If a hired sales attendant could be ignorant of these seemingly trivial tech terms, the i could but only imagine the worst: there are thousands if not millions of smart phones lovers who have no idea just what the specs of the devices the supposedly know are truely are. In my spare time i decided to cook up a “smart list” of phone specs, what the mean, how and why it matters and tech firms who excel in these categories.
However doing these in one concise article would be too bulky and for the fun of it; quite boring. To get around these hurdles i will be splitting these topic to a four part series.
For the first part i will be dealing with;
NAMING CONVENTIONS: this really isn’t quite a spec, but for the unsuspecting consumers who would love to buy their next mobile device based on their names: well i hate to break it, but from tecno to infinix, gionee to injoo, nokia to Asus and Apple to samsung, none of these guys have ever really made a sense in their naming conventions. You get Nokia roaring at you with it Lumia, and then the asha, you get tecno showcasing its p3, m3,s5,j7 and p5, you get Apple jumping in an out with the iphones and ipads, samsung and others are not left out. These guys barely follow a systematic naming procedure, though some are less culpable than others. I mean you have a situation were even Apple insiders are arguing whether the next iPhone release is gonna be called iPhone 7 or iPhone 6s. I mean since the logos of these firms arent exactly autographs of celebreties
, so dont be expecting them to name their products after your favourite celebs. But if you would like a cooly named device, names like the Samsung Galaxy Grand Max at just $400 will definitely do the magic. But again it depends on your definition of cool, nonetheless Samsung and Infinix got it them in these when it comes to naming
Lots or more like millions of people have ample knowledge of mobile phones and their company, but only a handful know about their operating systems.its actually very important to know whats behind our smart phones lovely, smooth and colourful touchscreens. It is apparent that Google’s Android OS is beating other brands even the mighty Apple’s IOS. Symbian OS an exclusive Nokia Property has been relegated to the background after being industry leaders for years, though it still carries some weight, it is only popular among low end feature phones. Popular OS for mobile devices include; meeGo,Maemo,Open web OS,Palm OS,BADA OS,BlackBerry OS, windows OS, Apple’s IOS and Android OS. While some of these OS might not ring a bell, we have used them one time or the other either in low end phones or advanced ones. Ok deal is, the next time you want to buy your device based on OS, your best four bet are Android, IOS,BlackBerry OS and Windows.
Google released the first android OS by the name Astro, then came Bender, cupcake,Donut, Éclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb,
Ice Cream Sandwich ,Jelly Bean and then the Lollipop which is Google’s latest version of its OS. Since stepping into the market Google’s android enjoyed immense popularity among smartphone users and manufacturers alike with top tech giants like Motorola, Samsung, Sony and lenevo adopting the OS for their mobile devices. With millions of apps available on the Google play store for the Android OS, Android is the perfect OS for any one that needs flexibility and a million of useful apps at his fingertips. Mobile phones with the latest version of Google’s android OS include; HTC one M9, Verizon’s MOTO x,Samsung Galaxy S6 edge and of course the Google Nexus.
Next is the IOS, Since then iOS was introduced, it has been undergoing many upgrades and currently the latest one is the iOS 6. Apple has still not allowed any other manufacturer to lay hands on its operating system. Unlike Android, Apple has more concentrated on the performance rather than appearance. This is the reason that the basic appearance of iOS is almost the same as it was in 2007. Overall it is very user-friendly and is one of the best operating systems in the world. So far iOS has been used in iPhone, iPhone 2G, iPhone 3G, iPhone 4, 4S, iPhone 5, 5S, 5C, not to mention their tablet pcs branded as iPad 3, iPad2 and iPad.
BlackBerry OS is a property of Research in Motion, and is close source just like Apple’s IOS.Some of the smartphones operating on blackberry OS are Blackberry Bold, Blackberry curve, Blackberry torch , Blackberry 8520, BlackBerry passport and other BlackBerry devices you can think of.You could say the OS is exclusive to BlackBerry devices. Its got a good track record against viruses unlike Android, so if you intend to play around mobile phones viruses, its better to play safe with BlackBerry.,
Windows OS is very popular, this feat is mainly due to its usage in computers world wide. Don’t get it twisted, the Windows mobile OS isn’t having much luck like the desktop versions, but that doesn’t mean it lost all it goodluck charm. It has had its own moments of fame, but it isnt posing much treat to the android OS due to restrictions from scares apps to well just about anything that makes other windows users hate windows mobile OS. Nokia lumia series are completely windows based, other devices that run Windows mobile OS include Samsung Focus and HTC Titan.
SENSORS AND CONTROL:
Normally an average smart phone can measure your acceleration, your speed and what direction you are headed in space,detect biometric prints etcetera. But unfortunately not all smart phones can do this, that is why that sensor based app you paid for and downloaded on playstore has refused to work. Mobile device aside , for a car to display its average speed on its speed meter , it must most importantly first have a speedometer. Same case applies here, for a mobile device to be able to perform some sensor based function, it needs to by fitted with the corresponding hardwares needed for such functions. Here is list of some of the hardwares to lookout for if you intend to get a device with ability to run sensor based apps without much hassles.

The central processing unit (CPU) is the unit, which performs most of the processing inside a computer, in this case a smartphone. To control instructions and data flow
to and from other parts of the smartphone. Over the last few months the smartphone industry has pecked unprecedented focus on device hardwares and processors rather than cosmetic appearance.
Smartphone manufacturers these days boast of their device computer like capabilities, from cool desktop like browsing to very cool High definition videos playback. Then we keep seeing names like ARM11, Cortex A8,Snapdragon, Tegra, OMAP, Armada, aand many more on the specification labels. But just how on earth do we make a sense of these names and how should the influence our device choices? Well here is a little clue;
The clock rate is one of the main characteristics of the CPU when performance is concerned. Clock rate is the fundamental rate in cycles per second (measured in hertz,kilohertz, megahertz or gigahertz) for the frequency of the clock in any synchronous circuit. A single clock cycle (typically shorter than a nanosecond in modern non-embedded microprocessors) toggles between a logical zero and a logical one state.
