Running an eCommerce startup/company in Nigeria is hard. Having to handle logistics, deal with traffic problems in some cities (Lagos, I see you), database management, and all that in the midst of economic uncertainty and poor power supply. It’s not easy.
A few weeks ago, we published a post about eCommerce in Nigeria. Traffic and website engagement was down on the major eCommerce websites in Nigeria; the state of the Nigerian economy is chiefly responsible for that. But despite the difficulties that surround eCommerce in Nigeria, that section of the Nigerian business club is still crowded. What’s more? There’s room for more members and more big players.
We started out by trying to create a list of all the eCommerce sites in Nigeria. Midway into the journey, we discovered that it would end in futility if we don’t place a threshold on this list. There are just so many, it’ll be hard to keep up. We decided that a list of the 20 most popular eCommerce sites is a better idea. We’ve divided the sites into categories so that we can represent as many niches as possible. It’s important to note that some websites like Taafoo and Adibba are not functional at the moment and so we left them off the list.
The 20 most popular Nigerian eCommerce sites
This is the most crowded category. What payments is to FinTech in Nigeria is what general merchandise is to eCommerce.
Jumia Nigeria, Konga, Dealdey, Yudala, Payporte, Vconnect, and Kara. Those seven are the major jacks-of-all-trade. They sell and deal in almost everything. Jumia Nigeria and Konga are the two main players on this field. It was their ‘war’ that opened the door for many of players we see today. At this point, I think it’s important that I remind you that the Jumia umbrella covers all the sub-entities under it. So it has swallowed up Jovago (Jumia Travel), Lamudi (Jumia House), Hellofood (Jumia Food) and the rest of the fold.
For a relatively new venture, Payporte has grown to become one of the biggest general merchandise eCommerce stores in Nigeria, within a short space of time. It even recently bagged an “eCommerce Company of the year” award from the CBN.
Dealdey doesn’t sell stuff as such; it just lists deals that are available at a particular time: discounts, promos, etc. Yudala was the first online and offline retail chain in Nigeria. Vconnect started out by listing businesses websites and physical address, and it still does that. Over time, it has evolved into a full eCommerce company with the advantage of all the data it has collated over the years. Kara is the last jack in this general merchandise tool-shed.

Fashpa – Fashpa is a fashion retail website that sells clothes, beauty products, and fashion accessories for women. The company also makes its own clothes for sale. I guess this site is just coming up, guess I visited their website, all I did see is a subscription form waiting to have my email
Traclist – Traclist goes a few steps farther than Fashpa and sells clothes and accessories for men, women, and children. Also, Traclist has a sellers programme for clothes merchants to sell their items on its platform.
Groceries and food

Mall for Africa – Mall for Africa exists because some of the largest eCommerce companies in the world don’t deliver to Nigeria. Or if they do, it costs a lot to get their products down to Nigeria. Mall for Africa allows Nigerians buy things from foreign stores and have them delivered to their homes.
OLX, Jiji.ng are the two most popular classified ads websites in Nigeria. These companies do not have stores or sell merchandise of their own. They are simply platforms for buyers and sellers to meet.
