Gionee, makers of the Gionee range of phones, have already made their presence felt in the robust mobile phones market in Nigeria. The mobile phone market space is so competitive with so many mid-range smartphones that the introduction of the Gionee M5 came as no surprised to many. But Gionee promised a lot with the M5, and in a way they succeeded in producing a mobile phone that can compete favourably with its peers in the market.
Here is a look at some of the features and specifications of the Gionee M5, that makes it a truly outstanding Android smartphone.
Body and Display
The M5 has an appreciably large 5.5 inch display with a resolution of 720×1280 pixels to ensure crisp and crystal clear pictures and videos. This is especially good news to movie buffs as the large display means you don’t have to squint your eyes to clearly see some of the smaller pictures on the screen.
And if you are afraid of the effects of rough handling on the screen, you can rest easy because the comparatively slim (152x76x8.6mm) M5 sports a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 to protect the display. This ensures that the Amoled capacitive touchscreen retains its pristine look for a long time.
CPU, Memory and Storage
Running on the Android lollipop 5.1, the M5 has a quad core 1.3 GHz Cortex-A53 processor mounted on a Mediatek MTK MT6735 chipset with a Mali-T760 GPU to power the graphics. For a mid-range smartphone, these are not specifications to be sniffed at.
Continuing its impressive lineup of specifications is a RAM of 2GB (there is also a 3GB RAM variant). This would come as a welcome bit of news to phone addicts who love multitasking on their Android phones. The Gionee M5’s internal storage is also very impressive at 16GB (a 32GB variant ia also available). With that sort of space to handle all your apps, videos, pictures and other files, one might think that is enough for storage, but the M5’s storage can be expanded with an additional 128GB with the microSD slot provided. Literally all the storage one would ever need.
This is where the M5 takes the cake. The capacity of the battery is very huge. At 6000mAH, this is one specifications that is one of a kind in a mid-range smartphone. The manufacturers of the M5 claim the phone can last over 4 days
on a single full charge. And with just 6% charge, the M5 can deliver up to 62 hours of standby time. That is a bold statement to make. The battery has a standby time of 557 hours on 3G and a talk time of 28 hours on 3G. The battery is so awesome that it can be used as a powerbank to charge other phones.
In a country like Nigeria where power supply is at best epilectic, a battery like that can really come in handy.
Price and Availability
Though the phone was announced in June 2015, it hit the Nigerian market five months later. On online stores like Konga, you can get it for between 43 and 45 thousand naira depending on your location.
So, would I buy the M5 if I had the money? A resounding yes to that. Looking at the specs, I know I would be getting the specs of a high-end phone at a very modest Price. Not many phones with 2GB RAM, 6000mAH battery and Corning Gorilla Glass come at that price.
