Google Translate

Google Translate

Google Translate has been around for so long it is a wonder it is not as popular as the very best free apps or softwares.

I guess one reason is because Google Translate, though the best app in the category, still faces challenges in translating whole passages.

Translating sentences out of context is still a feature of the app.

But improvements have being made and additional languages added to the service. Also, newer features like the ability to translate texts offline were added to the software so one can use it where there is no network.

Google Translate would continue to make the list of the best apps because it is far out the best translating tool at the moment.

It is a free app for both Android and iOS devices

Vevo

Vevo

Vevo is a free app for Android devices and iPhones specifically tailored for people who just can’t get enough of music videos.

Let me put it this way, if you love watching MTV, then Vevo is the app to use if you want to transfer your music video habits to your smartphone.

This is also an intuitive app that is able to predict your kind of music the more you use it. With time, the app is able to guess your favorites videos/artists and would feature them for you to play without having to use the search button.

Another remarkable feature of Vevo is it’s ability to help you find up and coming stars in the industry easily.

Quik

Quik

Quick is a free Android and iPhone app that automatically edits videos you took with your smartphone camera.

GoPro’s Quik would scan your videos and eerily but intuitively select the best moments from these footages and link them up into a single footage added with background music appropriate to the mood in the video.

It is just like watching a movie with awesome soundtracks.

One can use the Quik to wow friends on social media  into thinking one is a pro with video editing softwares. But it is all the work of Quik.

Pocket

Pocket

It is to my eternal shame that I discovered Pocket just this year.

What Pocket does is simple: as you scour the net, you might come across articles you don’t have time to read. In which case, just save them in Pocket to read later.

It is so much better that bookmarking. Though Pocket claim you don’t need an internet connection to read saved articles, I assure you, that is untrue. However, it uses just a tiny bit of your data to open saved items as the pages are open without ads or incessant links.

Since I discovered Pocket, I save tons of stuff in it.

The only downside is that you can only save items to Pocket on your computer. But you can read the articles on your computer, Android or iPhone later.

It is a free app.

Alto Mail

America Online introduced Alto Mail to pimp up your email service. The newest version of the app or the upgrade launched just two months ago made a fine email app very smart indeed.

The email app curates all the important info from your emails and arrange them according to categories. The net result is that it is easy to search for particular information.

These app is compatible with your emails whether it is Gmail or Yahoo mail and is available for free for Android smartphones and iPhones.

House Party

House Party

House Party is a free iPhone and Android app from the creators of Meerkat which was killed recently.

House Party is proof that with some people, rising from the ashes is just a pastime. If Meerkat was the app that blazed the trail for live video streaming, House Party promises to blaze a trail in something old but with a different spin.

House party takes social forum into the world of an all-video community. Basically, the app is about group chatting through videos where one can video chat with up to eight people at once.

As a new app, it is riding on the wave of being from the makers of Meerkat. For now though, it makes the list because of its newness and novelty.

Nuzzel

Nuzzel

This app is almost exactly one year old. It’s introduction came at a time when the tech world was questioning the survival of good old Twitter.

Why would anyone create a Twitter-spinoff when Twitter was in the throes of death seemed to be the question on people’s mind.

Okay Twitter is still with us and so is Nuzzle whose basic job is to curate the best tweets from the people you follow and arrange them chronological. A sort of summary of the best tweets in your timeline.

Now who wouldn’t want this Android and iPhone free app especially if they don’t have time to go through all tweets for the day?
