Seedstars Johannesburg has announced four winners that will advance to the grand finale of the competition following their emerging victory in the Johannesburg phase of the competition.

Last week Monday, we reported that Seedstars Johannesburg has selected eleven startups for the finals of the Johannesburg leg of the startup competition.

These eleven startups pitched before a panel of judges on the 26th of May 2017, and out of these eleven startups that pitched, four startups have come out top of the pack. The four startups that won the seed stage startup competition are: Invoiceworx (an inventory financing platform that allows retailers gain access to credit from suppliers), Empty Trips(a transport startup that connects transporters, brokers and shippers), CommuScore( a startup that specializes in savings and loans) and Muzi(a health tech startup).

The biggest seed stage startup competition which held in Johannesburg, South Africa witnessed a lot of applications at the announcement of the competition. The applications were so much that Claudia Makadrito, Regional Manager for Seedstars World Africa stated that there was a record high number of applications in this year’s edition.

“We had over 50% increase in the number of applications this year and we were really impressed by the quality of startups in Gauteng that tackled different problems in fintech, healthcare and energy, and offered innovative software and hardware solutions for real issues across the country and the continent,”  explained Claudia.

The four winners of the Johannesburg competition will represent Johannesburg at the grand finale of the competition in South Africa. The final phase of the competition will take place after the other areas that are partaking in the competition have selected their winners. Afterwards, the grand finale winner will represent South Africa at the Seedstars World stage.

Claudia added, “We are heading to Cape Town now, and I believe it will be a tough choice this year to pick the winner as we have so many good ones already.”
