For me, the question that pops into my head is, why did Qualcomm use the Las Vegas 2015 Consumer Electronic Show (CES) to showcase the Snapdragon 602a? A specially made automative grade smartphone processor specially adapted for cars. Maybe they wanted to remind the world that the Snapdragon 602a is still around and kicking. Or perhaps the marketing execs at Qualcomm wanted to just ramp up sales. Or to inform the world that new features have being added to the capabilities of the snapdragon 602a. I would pitch for the latter I guess.
When the Snapdragon 602a processor was announced over a year and a half ago (January, 2014), it was initially billed to handle in-car infotainment with an implied promise that handling entertainment softwares in cars was just the beginning of the what the processor could actually do.
At the CES Las Vegas unveiling, the new Snapdragon was not a radical change from what was already in the market. But it was enough to generate a buzz at the show. Basically, what the new chipset offers is this: you can customize your car to your own taste. I’m not talking about the pimping done to cars by car enthusiasts, this is customization based on the software integrated in the car. Just like we customize our smartphones settings to our taste or our pc desktop to the way it suits us.
This new Snapdragon 602a is really awesome in the sense of having multiple users’ using just one car, which, if you take it at face value, is fairly common around the world. Picture this scenario: you want to get into your car, you discover that the driver’s seat has been adjusted to a new position and height; the radio has being changed to a local station you will never be caught dead listening to; the side mirrors adjusted to a ridiculous angle; and so many other things multiple drivers do to cars. In which case you have to spend quite some time adjusting everything (or the most essential) things back to your preferred settings. It’s a drag most times having to do all that before zooming off.
This is where the snapdragon 602a comes in. Essentially you just sign in to your car. The software then recognizes your profile and adjust all the settings to your preferred settings. That is,the settings you picked when you initially signed in. Multiple drivers can also have their own preferred settings. The snapdragon 602a would automatically adjust to the new driver’s preferences.
In the car used to showcase the snapdragon 602a at the CES in Las Vegas, four cameras were fitted around the car to give the driver a bird’s-eye view of all the angles of the car. These cameras, connected naturally to the snapdragon 602a, is especially handy for parking in tight places like a shopping mall on a given Saturday.
According to Qualcomm, the potential for the various ways the snapdragon 602a can be used in the future are limitless. Very soon, cars, especially new cars, will be fitted with technology that can make make them get connected to each other, so you can easily transfer your car profile from one car to another by just using your mobile smartphone to sign into the different car. After all, all the cars are connected.
For those who love specs, the on-board, guad-core Central Processing Unit of the snapdragon 602a, clocks up to 1.5 GHz. The GPS is the Adreno 320 and runs at 400 MHz and the digital signal processor is also quite impressive at 600 MHz. There is also Bluetooth 4.1 and support for all kinds of connectivity modes like 3G and 4G LTE.
