Another recent report from the International Data Corporation (IDC) has revealed that personal computing devices (PCD), that is tablets and desktops have received a knock on the Middle East and African market scenes in the first quarter of 2017.

The International Data Corporation tracker revealed that the market had a shrink of 8.8%. The shrink was mainly due to the low demand for the personal computing devices in this region, that is, the Midde East and Africa (MEA) region.

The units shipments in the region stood at 6 million units, which is the lowest the Middle East and African region has ever had since 2011. The traditional desktops shipments for the first quarter dropped by  25.6% while the shipments for slate tablets dropped by 19.6%. These two devices represent the major determinants in the drop of the personal computing devices in the region.

Other personal computing devices such as notebooks and detachable tablets received an upsurge in the market. The notebooks increased with by 5.9 percent on the year on year basis while the detachable notebooks increased by a massive 102.5 percent in the QoQ basis, that is the first quarter of 2017.

The total volume of units stood at 24 million units for the year on year basis, which the International Data Corporation reported as the lowest annual volume recorded since 2011.

“This will correspond to a total of 24 million shipments for the year, which is the lowest annual volumes recorded since 2011,” in a statement by the International Data Corporation.

Fouad Charakla, senior research manager for client devices at IDC MEA, said, “The overall economic slowdown in most parts of the region has been a key inhibitor of the PCD market’s performance.”

He also stated that slated tablets are been relinquished by the desire of people to drift towards the smartphones’ direction.

The top five vendors for tablets in the MEA region’s market scene are Samsung, Apple, Huawei, Lenovo and vendor i-life.
