It is now official. The anticipated OnePlus 3 android smartphone would be launched on the 14th of June. While sales of the phone will start the very next day in China before moving to other regions. Since the OnePlus launched their first smartphone called OnePlus One, I have always being the fan of the company and their innovative ways. They are arguably the first phone makers to produce a truly first class phone at a very cheap price. The OnePlus had specs that put some established flagships to shame. The trend continued with the OnePlus 2 with phone specs major OEMs would charge a premium for. That is why the phones are dubbed ‘Flagship killer.’
OnePlus 3 is Invite-free
One of the sales gimmicks used for the first two phones was the invite only system. Basically, it meant you can only buy the phones when you get an invitation in your mail box from OnePlus to buy. This racket proved to be very successful as it made the phone exclusive and hard to come by. Just the fact that one had to wait for an invite bestowed a certain mystique on the phone. Getting the the invite was through a lottery on the website. So one had to be a registered member to even qualify for the lottery.
The invite only scheme attracted a lot of criticisms though. For one, people had no idea how the lottery was done. And a person could suddenly get the invite when funds are not available to buy the phone. However OnePlus claimed the system was put in place because they did not have enough units to meet the demand.
The good news now is that, for the OnePlus 3, OnePlus has dispensed with the invite-only scheme. People can now buy the phones directly from the website when it goes on general sale the day after the launch:
The invite system has a special place in our history. When we first started out, our team was incredibly small. We had no idea what the demand of the OnePlus One would look like. We also weren’t fans of flash sales, where there’s a risk of everything selling out immediately, forcing fans to wait indefinitely. To address this, we designed the invite system to give customers a chance to purchase a phone as soon as we had inventory ready.
With the OnePlus 3, we’re officially saying goodbye to invites. It’s a big step for us as a company, our fans, and fellow tech enthusiasts. After sending out millions of invites over the past two years, it’s hard to not think back to the early days and how far we’ve come. We’re proud to have reached a point where we feel confident in making our new device available without invites from day one.”
Rumored Specs of OnePlus 3
OnePlus have not officially released the specs of the OnePlus 3. But if history is to guide us, then expect to see top end specs. The kind of specs that will stand comfortably with the best flagship smartphones.
For now it is generally believed that OnePlus 3 would be 7.3mm thick, making it one of the slimmest smartphone in the market. The chipset is expected to be the latest from snapdragon, the 820. In all likelihood there will be two variants based on the RAM and internal storage. So it is possible to see a 4/6GB RAM in some sort of combination with a an internal memory storage starting from 32GB.
Other hardware specs includde a 5.5 full HD capacitive touchscreen, a 16MP rear camera and 8MP front camera for selfie lovers. The juice would be provided by a 3000mAh battery. This is not so big though. One is so used to seeing the bar raised high in OnePlus’ phones that I expected the battery to be a lot bigger.
All of these will be powered by Android 6.0.1,Marshmallow. And if you want to buy the phone, $400 dollars can get you one with change to spare.
VR Launch of the OnePlus 3
I guess OnePlus just had to do things differently. Now the invite-only scheme is no more, they had to come up with something new. This time around, the launch and first sales of the phone would be done through a VR app. So to be part of the unveiling, you have to download the app known as Loop. This makes it the world’s first VR launch and shopping experience. I hope they get it right though.
If you want to be part of the VR launch and sales in Nigeria, set your scheduler to 5.30 Pm on the 14th of June. That is the local time in London too.
