Microsoft HoloLens; Inventing the Future
Years ago, holograms were exclusive reserve of science fiction movies, and the very prospect of its existence zoned to the status of a “probable future” . Like in other fields, tech giant, Microsoft has raised its brains to change this myth with the unveiling of its AR gadget; the Microsoft HoloLens. The HoloLens may not project images of rouge aliens exerting their killer vendetta on human population like in some scifi movies but the have quite exiting things to offer.For the first time, holograms will become practical tools of day to day life, running deep into the fabric of our daily activities, making it easy to Interact with them to learn, or create something new. How it works..
The HoloLens works with the mediated reality concept, it uses augmented reality to be precise. For the “not so tech savy ones” Augmented reality (AR) is theoretically a branch of mediated reality that involves supplementation of the elements of real world environment by sound, video, graphics or GPS data. Real life environmental features are augmented with computer generated data, making it interactive and digitally manipulable. Its simply overlaying this computer data on the real world. (For Pete’s sake! Tell me you got that). The holoLens uses advanced sensors, a high-definition stereoscopic 3D optical head-mounted display, and spatial sound to allow for augmented reality applications, with a natural user interface that the user interacts with through gaze, voice, and hand gestures. Gaze tracking techniques such as head-tracking allows the user to bring application focus to whatever the user is looking at. Elements can be selected via an “air tap” gesture akin to clicking an imaginary mouse, using the iindex finger with the hand in a “pointing up pposition”.The “tap” can be held for performing a “drag ” function. The gesture for a “home” command (performing a similar function to pressing a Windows key on a Windows keyboard or tablet) is performed by opening one’s hand with the palm facingup. According to HoloLens chief inventor Alex Kipman, the HPU processes “terabytes of information” from
the HoloLens’s sensors in real time. The combiner lenses of the HoloLens consist
of three layers—for blue, green, and red.
The design of the HoloLens is sleek. Weighing less than the Occulus rift and more than Google glass at 0.4kg, the HoloLens fairs well in comparison to other tech gadgets of it category and excellently in comparison to other mediated reality gadgets. It is made up of a visor glasses unit connected to an adjustable padded inner headband. The unit can be tilted up and down, as well as adjusted forward and backward in relation to theheadband. To wear the HoloLens, the user uses an adjustment wheel at the back of the headband to secure it around the crown of
their head, supporting the weight of the unit. Depth sensors, video/picture came and the Holographic Processing Unit(HPU) are situated at the brow of the units.
The visors are tinted and contains a pair of combiner lenses that display the projected images in the lower half.
The HoloLens comes with pretty impressive specs;
an energy-efficient depth camera with a 120°×120° angle of view.
