If you love posting Instagram videos, your online virtual life just got a little more interesting. Before now, the total length for a video was just 15 seconds. I don’t do Instagram at all, but I just wonder how people who use the social network got by on just 15 seconds. I mean, what interesting thing can one pile into a fifteen seconds Instagram video.

The good news is that the length of an Instagram video has being increase to 60 seconds. There must be a good reason why there is still a limit on the duration of videos posted on Instagram. We would get to that later. Instagram has really come a long way from just a photo sharing network to what it is right now; one of the biggest social networks. So 15 second videos, which was on a sort of repeat loop to make the video look like GIF, just did not cut it for a big time player in the online social networking circuit.

The good news about the new length of instagram videos was announced by Instagram in a blog post:

“We want to bring you fun, flexible and creative ways to create and watch video on Instagram. As part of our continued commitment, you’ll soon have the flexibility to tell your story in up to 60 seconds of video. This is one step of many you’ll see this year.

In the last six months, the time people spent watching video increased by more than 40 percent. And longer videos mean more diverse stories from the accounts you love, whether it’s Selena Gomez (@selenagomez) hanging out with friends or beauty star Bretman Rock’s (@bretmanrock) latest makeup tutorial.”

According to Facebook, over a hundred million hours are spent by users watching videos per day on Facebook. This also reflected on the figures for Instagram videos.

What about limiting the length to just 60 seconds? According to Sephi Shapira, the CEO of MassiveImpact, a firm that analyses the performance of ads on mobile devices, 60 seconds video is just long enough to pass on an important or interesting message, while also being short enough to make viewers watch the video to the end:

“It’s about keeping users in the feed. Unlike YouTube where users jump from video to video, Instagram wants users to finish videos.”

To see if you smartphone has being enabled to send out the new 60 seconds Instagram videos, all you need to do is create a video of about 60 seconds and post it. If you are able to post it, then you are enabled. But if you can’t, that implies you need to wait for the new updated instagram to be send to your phone. That would happen shortly. The update is being rolled out in batches.

Users of iOS, as stated by the Instagram blog post, have an extra good news. Soon they would be able to join several short video clips into one long clip. So instead of using third party apps to join several videos, iOS devices can just remain on Instagram and do that. Instagram did not specify when this feature would be extended to Android devices.
