Honor 5X

The Huawei Honor 5X is one of those Chinese smartphone that leaves you wondering why it is called a mid-range smartphone. I can understand calling phones like these budget smartphones. But mid-range? That is redefining what mid-range is. In my own opinion.

One thing is for sure though, the Chinese OEMs are pushing into the market high-specs smartphones at very modest prices. The Lenovo Lemon 3 came with specs that a few years ago would have being what you get in a flagship device from either Samsung or iPhone. Same thing with Xiaomi’s Redmi 3 that was launched at the beginning of this year.

Honor 5X actually slipped under the radar. It was launched three months ago ( October to be precise) and released a month later in November. It is making big news now because Huawei just released the phone into the American market. And the Americans just love the phone.

You’ll love it too if you go through the specifications

Design and Dimensions and Display
The Huawei Honor 5X comes in white, gold, gray, black and silver colors to give people a wide array of colors to chose from. The 15.3 x 76.3 x 8.2 mm phone weighs just 158g, making it a very light phone.

The IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen has a display resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels. With a display size of 5.5 inches, one is getting a 1080p smartphone on a very large screen. Video addicts would love this.

Operating System, Memory and Storage
Honor 5X spots the latest Android 5.1,Lollipop, OS (based on the EMUI interface) as at the time it was released last year. Hopefully Huawei would push the Android 6, Marshmallow, upgrades soon enough.

The phone would be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 616 octa-core processor, supported by 3G of RAM (there is also a 2GB RAM model) and Adreno 405 GPU. All these are there to power all kinds of files and apps in the internal storage of 16GB. A card slot is present to provide additional storage of up to 128GB using a microSD.

Here too, Huawei did an impressive job of installing a 3000mAh battery. That is a lot of talk time or a decent amount of juice to watch a movie or several movies if you have the time.

As is the practice with OEMs these days, the battery is non-removeable.

Other Features
At the back of the Huawei Honor 5X is a finger print scanner for additional security; a 13MP primary camera and a 5MP secondary camera to give selfie-lovers something to be happy about ; dual sim slots with both slots able to support 4G, but not at the same time though.

You can get this phone on online stores like Amazon for just $200. Yes you heard right. 200 dollars can get you this smartphone. So what is mid-range about the phone? The price? Definitely not the specs. Though some might argue that a Snapdragon 616 is rather ancient, all the other specs are hands down top-notch.
