Honor 6 Plus

I just love everything about life. I am one of the admins of this innovation tech blog for all Africa

Scouring through the Internet in my never ending-ending search for reasonably priced high-speed phones, I fortunately stumbled on Honor 6 Plus. A little research showed the Honor brand is a spin-off of the Chinese tech giant Huawei. That should be a nice thing anyway you look at it because the Huawei brand is not something to be sniffed at really. So having them enriching the smartphone landscape with their own device is really good news. This is not Huawei’s first foray into the smartphone world to be sure, but the more the merrier. Especially if the intention is to give consumers phones that directly competes with the hugely popular OnePlus One.

Honor 6 Plus

Let’s get down to looking at the Honor 6 plus and how it stacks up against other smartphones it is directly competing with. See here for full specifications

Display and Design
Announced and released in December last year, the Honor 6 plus is a huge 5.5 inch phone with a rear shell or cover made from glass fibre. This is a marked departure from the normal plastic we see on most phones like this. The fibre glass shell makes this phone a very rugged phone indeed. The downside of having such a durable shell is that it is rather heavy, but not so heavy to become a serious problem though.

Honor 6 PlusThe screen of the Honor 6 plus is a delight to behold. This is because it has very narrow bezel of just 2.8mm, giving the impression the screen size is more than the 5.5 inches. The display also sports a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 and is a 1080 X 1920 pixels, full HD IPS display. The screen size and display-resolution combination means watching high quality movies on the Honor 6 Plus would be a delight indeed.

The camera specs are not the kind of crazy figures you get in similar phones of this range like the OnePlus Two. But from the users’ reviews, it is obvious the 8 MP rear and front cameras are decent enough. As is always the case, the MP is not the issue, but the quality of the lens. The f/2 lens on the Honor 6 plus really compensated for the relatively low MP to produce sharp photos with a dual LED flash for poor light shooting.

At 8 MP also for the front camera, this phone is a selfie-paradise for those who love taking selfies.

Storage, Performance and Chipset
A pleasant change is that the Honor 6 plus does not use a mediatek chipset. Instead a HiSilicon Kirin 925 octa-core chipset is what you get in this phone. The performance is overseen by a 1.3GHz quad-core CPU to handle basic tasks like playing music and other easy stuff while another CPU clocked at 1.8 GHz handles the more demanding stuff like HD gaming and serious multitasking.

Honor 6 PlusAt the time the Honor 6 Plus was launched, the smartphone was an Android 4.4 kitkat, but upgrade has now being provided to take it up a notch to Android 5.1 lollipop. With an adequate 3GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage expandable up to 128 GB with a microSD card, the phone packs enough storage and engine to adequately handle large files and any heavy task thrown at it.

This is one feature the Honor 6 plus really stands out tall. At 3600 mAh, this smartphone really dwarfs it’s rivals. And from uders’ reviews of the phone’s battery performance, this is one phone you can use heavily for a whole day without any need to recharge it. While mild usage on a full charge can take up to two days without any need to recharge the phone.

For such a huge battery, charging it from zero to full takes just over two and a half hours. Not fast charging by any stretch, but very okay if the compensation is one whole day of heavy usage without a need to recharge

Verdict: for a phone sold at just under £300, and packed with all these specs, I’ll definitely recommend the phone to anybody. Heck, at that price, the phone is a bargain. If the Honor 6 plus was made to really compete with the OnePlus One, I think it did a good job of that and also of competing favorably with more expensive brands like the iPhone 6 and Samsung Galaxy S5.
