When I first saw “steel”, the first thing that came to my mind was that this phone was going to be something like the Nokia 3310 and its very recent follower, the Nokia 6, which can be used to crack walnuts. And for the fact that steel sounds more masculine than the names of the others, I also thought it would be used to break harder things than walnuts, say coconuts – that’s on a lighter note though.
Gionee has released a budget phone – the Gionee Steel 2 – which has every edge on other smart phones that might be in its category as its specifications are pretty higher and better than just any budget phone you see. To me, the specs seems higher than the price. Let’s see what it seems to you. All you need to do is to stay with me..
TECHNOLOGY AND DESIGN
Apologies to the party involved but while phone makers like iTel are still living in the past and have decided not to upgrade to the modern day reality, smarter ones like Gionee have showed determination to keep up with the competition, which is evident in this phone supporting the 4G LTE network.
It runs on an Android operating system v6.0 Marshmallow with Amigo 3.5 UI.
Talking about the size, it features a 5 inch screen with a display resolution of 1280 * 720 pixels (HD). While it measures 144.3 * 70.5 * 8.6 mm and has a Weight of 160g. The Gionee Steel 2 is built with a metal unibody design.
HARDWARE AND MEMORY
The Gionee Steel 2 possesses a quad-core 64-bit MediaTek MT6737 processor with a processor speed of 1.3 GHz.
For those who have had a new year resolution not to purchase a smartphone with less than a 2 GB RAM, I am very pleased to inform you that the Gionee Steel 2 boasts of a 3 GB RAM and has two variants with respect to the internal storage. One variant possesses a 16 GB storage while the other has a 32 GB storage. But then, both can be expanded up to the capacity of 128 GB with the use of a micro SD card.
Sensors available include the Accelerometer, Light, Proximity, Compass, and the Fingerprint Sensor. Its actually remarkable that the fingerprint sensor in present in the Gionee Steel 2, it actually gives it an edge over some other smartphone brands.
The rear camera of the Gionee Steel 2 boast of a quality of 8 MP while selfie lovers can make do with just 5 MP with the front facing camera.
I don’t know if our “campaign” against the discrimination of selfie addicts has been having any effect but it all looks like it hasn’t. Gionee just proved that to us, but then, we won’t relent at all.
MULTIMEDIA AND CONNECTIVITY
Bluetooth is of v4.0 while the Gionee Steel 2 supports Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, and GPS with A-GPS and micro-USB is of v2.0. It still has the 3.5 mm audio jack available.
I’m very bewildered by the fact that the Gionee Steel 2 meets and exceeds my expectations in this area. In fact, it floored my base battery capacity with its 4000 mAh battery. It is very commendable that a phone of this caliber possesses such battery power, as others with higher specs only boast of lower battery power. It a good one from Gionee.
So now to the price. I’m sure you must be thinking about how much this “low budget” but high spec phone costs. Would the price complement the fact that it is low budget, or the fact that it is pretty high spec.
The Gionee Steel 2 would sell for about N40,000 in Nigeria, Rs. 12,810 in India and ¥1299 in China.
