Gionee used the occasion of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, to launch its latest flagship Android smartphone, the Elife S8. The Barcelona showpiece event was always the likely place for smartphones OEMs to launch their best and latest. Gionee also used the occasion to show its brand new logo. Which is inspired by smiley emojis.
The Elife S8 would be an upgrade of the Elife S7 launched just last year. Review copies were given to tech journalists at the event. So for a hands on review, you can check this excellent post. We are going to look at some of the standout features of the phone here.
Design and Display
At a thickness of 7mm and weighing just 147.2g, the Elife S8 is actually even lighter and slimmer than the industry standard, Samsung’s Galaxy S7. The full dimensions are 154.3 x 74.9 x 7mm.
The Elife S8 has a metallic body encasing a display size of 5.5 inch of AMOLED capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1080×1920 pixels. The display is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4. According to the specs, the Elife S8 also comes with a 3D touch feature which works almost exactly like the display feature found in the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus.
RAM, Chipset, and Storage
The Gionee Elife S8 is an Android 6.01 Marshmallow smartphone. The chipset is the MediaTek6755 P10 Helio, supporting an octa-core processor clocked at an impressive 1.9GHz.Just why Gionee decided to use the P10 Helio is a puzzle. That class of chipset is definitely mid-range in MediaTek classification. This is supposed to be a flagship. It is only natural to use only top rated chipses for flagships.
On the chipset is a RAM of 4GB and a Mali-T860MP2 GPU. This is what we are talking about. Gionee certainly didn’t spare anything here. The internal storage too is quite impressive at 64 GB. This can further be expanded by 200 GB with an external microSD.
Users have come to expect the best from Gionee in terms of the camera quality. At 16MP spec for the rear camera, the f/1.8 aperture lens promises to capture high quality images. Selfie lovers too would have fun with the 8MP front camera.
The Gionee Elife S8 has 3000 mAh non-removeable battery. Gionee lovers may see this as very disappointing in the face of Gionee’s M5 huge battery which is twice this. It was expected that a flagship should have all the best features. But, if the chipset and processor are both optimized to be energy efficient, 3000mAh can go a long way. Even the Galaxy S7 sports the same battery capacity.
The Gionee Elife is not a cheap phone for a MediaTek device. It is billed to be sold at $495. At today’s exchange rates, that can be anything from N80,000 to almost N200,000 depending on where you are sourcing for the dollar.
Clearly this phone was not made for the mass market. But the price quoted here is not the official price for Nigeria. It is just the conversion at the prevailing exchange. It is possible that when it debuts in Nigeria, it would be cheaper than the raw conversion I did here.
The Gionee Elife S8 would be available to consumers in two months.
