Android Nougat update for Galaxy S7 & S7 Edge

I am a passionate writer with a keen nose for the news and stories that matter. Sit back, relax and enjoy the tech ride with me as I take you into my own version of all things techie

A couple of months ago, we ran a report about the Android phones the would be graded to the latest Android OS, Nougat. Samsung have kept to their promise of updating their high-end devices this month.

Though at that time, what Samsung had in mind was to start the upgrade with the Note 7. But we all know the unfortunate saga that befell the Note 7. So with the absence of Note 7, owners of the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge are going to be the first beneficiaries of the software upgrade.

The announcement of the upgrade came two days ago. The update though is not a full roll out of the software to all owners of the devices. Only a certain number of people would benefit from what Samsung is calling a test.

To quality for the test, one needs to be part of the Galaxy Beta Program:

Starting on November 9, the Galaxy Beta Program has opened to Galaxy S7 and S7 edge* users residing in the U.S., U.K., and Korea, with users based in China being able to participate in the program shortly. Applicants are currently being accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Throughout the Galaxy Beta Program period**, users can get a feel for Android 7.0 Nougat*** with Samsung’s latest UX, and can provide feedback on performance, reliability and usability. Users’ responses will in turn help Samsung develop reliable, high-performing software and provide an improved and optimized experience to all Galaxy users.

Users that have an active Samsung Account and meet program requirements may apply for the program by downloading the Galaxy Beta Program app through Galaxy Apps or the Samsung Members app which is available through the Google Play store or Galaxy Apps depending on their country of residence.”

I guess that explains everything you need to do to get the Android Nougat on your device and which part of the world you need to be in too.

It is a pity that Samsung is restricting the update to only three countries initially, with China getting it soon after. What about the millions of users of the devices in Africa?

These are the sort of things that really gets me riled when it comes to how these tech companies treat us in this part of the world. It seems we are just an after thought in every new, good thing.

Not even good enough to be the icing on the cake.

Anyway, the watchword here for the users in these disenfranchised countries is ‘patience‘. I want to console myself with the thought that Samsung is rolling out the Nougat update in this manner to make sure that the new OS would work very fine in these devices before releasing it to the wider world.

After the debacle of Note 7, they need to be very careful not to rush these things right?

However, I am still a little disappointed that it is taking Samsung this long to take action on Nougat update for their devices.

As the number one Android OEM, maintaining that status in all aspects of the Android ecosystem should have been the right thing to do.

It is understandable that Nexus phones get the updates first. But why not be the first OEM outside of Nexus to push the updates to users of Samsung devices.

For the records, LG V20 was the first phone to get Nougat update.

Anyway, Samsung could do with a bit of good news because in the last couple of months, all Samsung related news was bad for the company.

Even Samsung washing machines got into the act as some of them started catching fire around the world, joining the Note 7 as two products determined to bring down the tech giant.
