Parse announced just barely a month ago that it is going to make all of its software development kits (SDKs) open and available for its developers to be able to access. For now the Parse SDKs can be accessed on GitHub for those on the Android, OS X and iOS platforms. Other platforms like Windows, Xamarin, Javascripts will have to wait a little longer before Parse SDKs are also open to them.


This must have being welcome news for developers because before now, the SDKs were just there to be used but how it works and operates was hidden to them. This must have being frustrating to geeks who felt they could help in addressing inherent limitations of Parse SDKs but were hampered by the simple fact that the source codes were closed to them. In a way this new development is going to fast track the development of parse.

Apparently, the demand to make parse open source has being on for a while. Even James Yu, the co-founder of Parse admitted as much, saying further that users of the services,

‘….want more transparency and know how the SDKs interact with the backend servers. Before today, our SDK was a black box to them. They put it into their application and use it at the SDK level. But a lot of them crave transparency and want to see under the hood. ‘

Parse is a cloud-based app infrastructure for all kinds of operating systems and scripts like Windows, Android, iOS, javascripts etc. On the parse platform, you can add flexible and editable applications and services that supports the the final UI in a very short time. This enables app and software developers to launch completed apps  easily without bothering about how well the server hosting their program is going to handle all the data uploaded on the server. In other words, Parse handles server management while developers focus 100% on doing what they do best.


When facebook bought Parse in 2013, it sole aim was to make it easier for developers to build apps by taking away all the complexities involved in handling the app-building process. In other words, it would not change Parse’s mission statement. For the most part Facebook has kept it’s words as it also used the Parse infrastructure to join the race into the world of Internet of all things (IoT). A project other major companies like Google, Apple and Samsung have being involved in for a while. Even the former biggest smartphone maker Blackberry recently joined the IoT train in a bid to add more momentum to its fledgling restructuring plans.parse


But how committed is Facebook to be a big time player in IoT project? Considering the amount of funds committed to the Parse project, Facebook will only be competing at the mid-level stage (to be charitable) with start-ups like Technical Machine, Ayla Networks, Sparks Labs and Electric Imp. These are small players in the industry who collectively cannot scratch the surface of Facebook’s financial might.

That the future applications of IoT projects like Parse are enormous is just stating the obvious. The wonder here is why Facebook, two years after buying Parse, is still dragging its feet in terms of commitment. Little things like moving the Parse platform to its own infrastructure would be a confident boost to developers. But ironically, Parse is still hosted on Amazon cloud, Parse’s original home.

Another way to summarize or quantify Facebook’s level of commitment to such a fine project like parse is this: Facebook is competing with other tech giants to provide a cloud-based back-end for the internet of things on a rival’s own cloud services. How ironic can things get?
