There are several battery charging-myths out there. There are so many of them it would be difficult to catalog them all in one neat little book. That would be so cool as a guide for people to rush and consult. We know the battery is one of the most important components of our smartphones. Let’s put it this way, a crap battery on a high-end smartphone is as good as having no smartphone at all.
Because of this, it is easy for people to be taken in by any new ‘fact’ about our batteries. The so called facts are so many; like
1.it is not good to use your smartphone while charging it.
2.it is not good to overcharge your battery
3.constantly charging your battery would damage it
4.draining your battery completely before recharging it fully would help preserve your battery life
5.on the other hand it is not good to completely drain your battery.
6.using power generating set to charge a battery would kill it faster
7.charging your battery with a laptop will weaken it
What are the facts, and what are the battery-charging myths? The answers to these questions are important for us here in Nigeria because of our unstable power situation. And of course because of our relatively low per capita income, which means we want our battery to last as long as possible before replacing them. But with the recent introduction of non-removable batteries by OEMs, the option of easily replacing battery has being taken away from the consumers. Preserving our batteries is now very important
Let’s deal with some of the battery charging myths or fiction in no particular order. Those who claim that not unplugging your phone (when the battery is full) from the charger destroys the battery normally point to this well-written and brilliant article as conclusive proof. Actually, the article concludes that, though it is better to unplug your phone from the charger, no damage is done to the battery if you don’t unplug it.
The article also inadvertently debunks other battery-charging myths. In the first instance, the technology behind the Li-Ion batteries in smartphones does not allow for overcharging. When the battery is full, the smartphone simply cuts off power supply to the battery.
Again, using your phone while plugged in has no effect on the battery. When the battery is full, the phone uses power directly from the charger. That means the battery is now acting as a backup. That’s another battery-charging myth debunked.
The simple reason why OEMs made it impossible to overcharge batteries is because Li-ion batteries explode if they get too hot due to too much charge.
Another battery charging-myth debunked by the article is draining your battery fully before recharging versus charging the battery while you still have 80-90% charge. Basically it is preferably to always charge your battery when your have the chance. Don’t wait for it to completely discharged. This has to do with the charging cycles of smartphone batteries.
The charging cycle of batteries is the number of times you can charge a battery from 0 – 100 % before it loses its potency. The average charge cycles is around 400. So draining the battery to zero before charging uses up the charge cycle. It is better never to allow the battery discharge completely before recharging. That should be done about once every 3 months or so to re-calibrate the battery.
Your power source also does not really matter. As long as the output from your charger is enough to charge your cell phone, your battery is OK. The only problem is the longer time it might take to charge the battery.
How many battery-charging myths did we burst today? It does not matter really. I am sure there are several other battery-charging myths out there just waiting to become fashionable.
