Do you own an iPad? Well get another to make it two and you might have just gotten yourself a badass laptop. Apple inc. has been granted a patent for a super strong multipurpose magnetic stand that let’s you stick two iPads together. Sticking two iPads together might seem quite cool but that’s actually not the purpose of the whole fuzz – the idea is configuring two iPads with the help of the magnetic stand to become a “laptop”.

Why carry around a laptop or huge tablets with a keyboard when you could
stick two iPads together and make one of them a keyboard? Lol. But its quite Cool all the same. Apple inc. files a lot of patents frequently but only few of them make it to the ‘production line’. The company recently file a patent on Using Fuel Cell Technology to prolong battery life for weeks .

Though the patent published by the United States Patent And Trademark Office did not specifically mention Apple’s iPad as the electronic device to use the new invention, but any sane thinking person would know it’s ‘most certainly’ the iPad. Patent document images from the US patent office shows the iPad secured on top of a treadmill, while another illustrates the device hanging from the roof of a car, though am not sure the cops are going to let you try that while driving – at least not anytime soon. Additionally, the one that got geeks and ipad fans talking is the patent sketch that depicts two iPads connected to each other magnetically, creating a hinge between the two displays.

When the patent was first filed with the United States patent office in 2011, Apple envisaged it being attached to exercise machines, in vehicles, used in restaurants and more.

According to the patent titled “Magnetic stand for electronic device” with United States patent number “9163775”, “….The magnetic stand is configured to
rigidly hold a portion of the tablet device in place and to shield the magnetic field from adversely affecting nearby devices susceptible to strong magnetic fields. The shielding portion of the magnetic stand allows for significant increases in magnetic field strength when compared to similarly configured, unshielded products”. Electromagnetic shielding is the practice of reducing the electromagnetic field in a space by blocking the field with barriers made of conductive or magnetic materials. Apple’s magnetic stand isn’t using your average magnet, patent documents reveals it will use Neodynium a rare-earth magnet, arguably the strongest of it kind, that can be “channeled into a well- defined directional pattern”. The stand is made up of two components, a cupped portion and a magnetic attachment mechanism. The patent explains that “…The cupped portion has an interior with a size and shape arranged to accommodate the first portion of the tablet device by providing a friction force to an exterior surface of the tablet device housing. The magnetic attachment mechanism includes a magnetic element for magnetically interacting with the magnetic attachment system, the magnetic interaction causing the cupped portion to secure the tablet device.”

Apple further explains that quite a number of manufacturers have tried to produce a similar device but since most tablets have no built in mounting mechanism, mounting devices tend to be somewhat cumbersome and generally do not allow for easy removal. However, I personally think even Apple’s magnetic stand may have issues related to detaching the tablets (_iPads). If the magnets used in the magnetic stand are so strong enough to hold the iPads in position in a moving car or in places that is likely to experience frequent disturbances, then detaching the iPad from the stand after use may cause some migraines. A quick fix will be to employ some some sort of electromagnetism with a controlled power source but that will require quite a lot of power to run.
