A review of Android smartphones under $100 is so apt at this time. The Naira is so weak, seriously affecting the prices of our regular phones. Smartphones that used to be termed ‘mid-range, budget smartphones’ are still mid-range but sold at prices definitely not ‘budget’ for the average Nigerian. Mid-range phones are now sold at prices, that last year, would get you a decent high-end phone.

This series of smartphones under $100 is meant to give hope to those who have given up on changing their device because of the high cost foreign exchange. Or you can just pick one up as a gift for somebody. How the Chinese do this is a mystery. But this phones, though costing under $100, are really not bad at the price they are being sold. Bear in mind as you read through, that when matched against the cost, the phone specs are sometimes very impressive. And pound for pound, they hold up well against costlier phones.

So as not to scrape the bottom of the barrel, phones that make the cut in this series must have a display size of at least 4.5” and RAM of 1GB. There are so many phones those conditions had to be set or we would take forever writing these series.

Smartphones under $100Oukitel U2
Oukitel are doing some wonderful things. They have the top price of the smartphone with the world’s biggest battery. And they also have these cheap phones too. Though the crown for the cheapest smartphone goes to the Indians with the Freedom 251 Android smartphone.

At about $90, Oukitel U2 just made the cut at being $10 under the cut. So apart from the sub $100 price tag what makes Oukitel U2 an OK phone?

The oukitel U2 has a display size of 5 inch and is 2.5D qHD screened-phone spotting the Android 5.1, Lollipop, operating system. The processor is clocked at 1.GHz. It is a quad-core affair mounted on MTK6735 chipset. The internal storage and RAM stand 8GB and 1GB respectively.

The battery is just 2050mAh with a rear camera of 5MP and 2MP front camera for selfie lovers to play with. Other features include dual sim, Bluetooth 4.0, OTG, OTA, and 4G LTE network for fast Internet connectivity.

Not bad for a $90 smartphone.
