We all know the internet can be a very dangerous place. Anything can happen especially if you plunge into the world of the dark web. For most folks who do their business in the open web, that danger lies mostly in viruses, malwares and other threats unleashed daily on hapless online users.

The truth is, most internet users are so unsophisticated it is easy for hackers to infect their systems anyway they chose. Fortunately, it is very easy to provide a measure of protection against threats. Though, when it comes down to it, there is nothing like absolute protection. We just do our best to make it hard for the criminals to hurt our data.

The anti-virus softwares below are my personal list of the best softwares one can get online. Most of them are free. Thing is, most of the free ones are upgradeable to premium paid versions. It is good to try the free versions to see if it works for you before upgrading to the paid version.

However, upgrading to a paid version is not mandatory. The free versions can cover most or all your online security requirements.

Microsoft Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials

Most of the world’s operating system is Microsoft’s Windows. And who better to defend a computer’s operating system than the manufactures of that operating system.

On my windows 7 PC, MSE is my number one choice as far as antiviruses are concerned. It is really surprising to me it is not the number one for most people who prefer third party antivirus. I guess that is because MSE is just gaining a reputation as a good antivirus.

I like it because it is very light-weight and runs quietly in the background without disturbing you with incessant notifications. Being a Microsoft product, it integrates easily with the Windows OS.

You can download MSE from several sites like CNET, Softpedia, and Softonic. The most reliable place to get it is of course from Microsoft.

Windows Defender

Windows Defender

Windows Defender is the MSE version for widows 8 and Windows 10 PCs. It comes pre-installed in the software. What this means is that if you buy a Windows 8, 8.1 and 10 computer, the Windows Defender is already bundled into the software.

It works like MSE. Quietly, unobtrusively and effectively in the background. Some people do not see Windows Defender as a good anti-virus. It is certainly not the best, but at the same time not many free programs are as good as it. If your PC runs a Windows Defender, you as safe enough.

Installing an additional anti-virus would not pose a problem to the system. Windows 8 and 10 are programmed to shut off Windows Defender when the system detects another anti-virus.

Avira Antivirus

Many reviews rated Avira the best free anti-virus. I am sure it does wonderful things that is why close to half a billion people around the world are using this free tool. 500 million people can’t be wrong right?

Some important features of the antivirus are:

  • It is fast and user friendly without too many notifications
  • It can identify unwanted malicious softwares and apps hidden inside the real one
  • It has a browser extension to prevent sites from tracking you online

Most importantly of all, there is an interesting Avira community online. The awesome thing about this community is that if one user of Avira in any part of the world encounters a serious problem, all other users around the world get the ability to detect the problem without delay.

Downloading and installing Avira should not pose a problem. As usual, it can be downloaded from reputable websites and from the official website.

Avast, just like Avira, is one of the biggest names when it comes to antivirus software. With Avast, you get an anti-virus that’s the can

  • Protect your system against malwares and viruses
  • It can detect weak points in your home wifi

It is not for nothing that Pcmag had this to say about Avast:

Avast Free Antivirus 2016 scores high in independent lab tests and in our own tests, especially our antiphishing test. Bonus features like the new password manager and innovative router security scan make it an excellent choice for free antivirus protection.”

Downloading and installing Avast should not be a problem if your PC has no inherent issues of compatibility.
