Ecobank launches new app'

Writer and Social entrepreneur.

Ecobank, a pan-African banking conglomerate, with banking operations in 36 African countries, has launched a new mobile banking app. The special thing here is that the app is a unified platform that lets Ecobank customers in 33 African countries shop, send money and pay bills from the convenience of their phones. It is being advertised as the “first unified app delivered by any institution for use in 33 countries.”

The leading independent regional banking group in West Africa and Central Africa, launched the app over the weekend in Lagos, Nigeria. The app was designed to work with Ecobank’s Xpress Account, and it allows customers to open new accounts remotely without paper references. It also supports transfer of money across borders without paying fees for everyday transactions.

According to the Eco Bank MD, Charles Kié, he explained the choice of Lagos as their launch location saying, “Nigeria is a leading hub for entrepreneurship and technology for Ecobank. This is why we chose Lagos as the venue to launch the Ecobank Mobile App. This new product will allow customers in Nigeria and other affiliates across our vast network, to grow their businesses by giving them a convenient and secure way of banking.”

Also speaking at the launch event was the Ecobank’s Group Executive for Consumer Banking, Patrick Akinwuntan, who said, “This product launch fulfils our promise to create relevant solutions for consumers. With the Ecobank Mobile App, Ecobank customers can now make and receive instant payments across 33 African countries on their mobile devices. They can also pay in store with their mobile phones. This is genuine convenience delivered to our consumers.”

If their aim is achieved, this newly launched app would bring to their platform, 100 million customers. I am really hoping this feat is achieved.

Taking a look at the present mobile bank or FinTech apps, one would discover that it is very limited as to the amount of countries you can transact with. This app has come to tackle that problem, and would be made possible with its presence in a lot of African countries.

Some of the African subsidiaries include; Ecobank Benin, Ecobank Burkina Faso, Ecobank Burundi, Ecobank Cameroon, Ecobank Cape Verde, Ecobank Central African Republic, Ecobank Chad, Ecobank Congo Brazzaville, Ecobank Côte d’Ivoire, Ecobank Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ecobank Nigeria and 25 others.
