The first African FinTech Awards and Conference will be held within the Finance Indaba Africa expo in Johannesburg in October 2016. Finance Indaba Africa is the largest conference and expo for finance professionals on the continent.

BUT HOLDUP, WHAT IS FINTECH?

FinTech or financial technology has emerged as a relatively new industry in our modern day world. FinTech is an industry comprising companies that use technology to offer financial services. These companies operate ininsurance, asset management and payment etc

It is a line of business based on using software to provide financial services. Financial technology companies are generally startups founded with the purpose of disrupting incumbent financial systems and corporations that rely less on software.

The conference will feature international keynote speakers, master classes, pitches and round tables from the African FinTech 100. The purpose of the Awards is to honour innovators that are influencing the categories of lending and finance, payments and transfers, incumbent banks, InvestTech, blockchain and bitcoin, and retail banking in Africa.

The best 100 African FinTech companies will be selected via a combination of public voting and expertvoting (public votes constitute 25% of the weight in determining the African FinTech 100). FinTech companies originally from another continent but based in or focusing on Africa are also eligible for nomination.

DO YOU WANT TO VOTE?

Public voting is currently on-going and it’s ending September 19, 2016. Some innovators on the list include Paga, Wala, Remita, Connect Africa Payments and Interswitch.
